How to write a creative brief

A good brief saves rounds of revisions. It tells your team what to make, who it is for and how you will judge it.

  1. Start with the objective. Write what the work should change in one or two sentences, such as more demo requests or fewer support tickets. Everything else in the brief serves this line.
  2. Describe one audience. Name who will watch or read it and what they already know. A brief written for everyone gives the creative team nothing to aim at.
  3. Pick one key message. If the audience remembers a single idea, what is it? Supporting points can sit in the script, not the brief.
  4. List every deliverable and format. Lengths, aspect ratios and cutdowns change how a shoot or edit is planned. Adding a 9:16 version late often means reframing every shot.
  5. Show, do not just tell. Two or three reference links explain tone faster than a paragraph of adjectives. Say what you like about each one.
  6. Name one final approver. Feedback from many people is useful, but one person signs off. Put their name and the due dates in the brief so nobody is surprised.

Questions about creative briefs

What is a creative brief?
A creative brief is a short document that tells a designer, editor or production team what to make. It covers the objective, audience, key message, deliverables, tone, mandatories and deadlines, so the team can start without a long back and forth.
How long should a creative brief be?
One to two pages is enough for most projects. If a section needs more than a few lines, it usually belongs in the script, shot list or brand guidelines instead.
Is this creative brief template free?
Yes. The generator and the blank template are free to use with no sign up. Everything you type stays in your browser and nothing is sent to SoCreative.
Can I use the brief with any agency or freelancer?
Yes. The brief is a standard format that works for in-house teams, agencies and freelancers. On SoCreative, the same details go into the platform brief, which also shows the fixed price before you submit.
