What is a talent release form?

A talent release, also called a model release or appearance release, is a short agreement where someone who appears in your video, photos or audio gives you permission to record them and use that recording. It covers their image, likeness, voice and name, and sets out where and for how long you can use the content.

When you need one

Get a signed release from anyone who is clearly identifiable in content you plan to publish or use commercially. That includes employees in a brand video, customers in a testimonial, actors and models in an ad, and interview subjects in a case study. People in the far background of a public place are usually treated differently, but if in doubt, ask them to sign.

What to include

  • Who is recording and who is being recorded, with the shoot date and location
  • The media covered: video, photo, audio or voice
  • How the content can be used: channels, territory and how long
  • Whether you can edit the footage and use their name
  • Any payment, or that there is none
  • Extra consent from a parent or guardian when the talent is under 18
  • Signatures and dates from both sides

Collect releases on the day, before or straight after filming, and store them with your project files so they are easy to find when the content is published or reused.

FAQ

Talent release questions

Is a model release the same as a talent release?
Yes, in practice. Model release is the common term in photography and talent release in video, but both give you permission to record someone and use their likeness. This template covers video, photo, audio and voice in one form.
Do employees need to sign a release?
It is good practice. An employment contract may not cover appearing in marketing content, and a separate release makes the permission clear, including whether you can keep using the content after they leave.
What if the talent is under 18?
Turn on the under 18 option. The release then adds a section where a parent or legal guardian gives consent on the minor's behalf, with their own signature line. Rules for minors vary by location, so check local requirements.
Is this template legally binding?
A signed release can be binding, but this template is a starting point, not legal advice. Laws differ between countries and states, so have it reviewed by a lawyer for your jurisdiction before you rely on it.
